Alexandria East Wastewater Treatment Plant - Egypt
Water & Wastewater
:: Completed Projects
:: 2023 ::
The project is implemented by the consortium of SUEZ and the Arab Contractors Company. It is co-financed by the Agence Française de Développement and the Ministry of Housing, Utilities, and Urban Communities, represented by the Construction Authority for Potable Water and Wastewater "CAPW". The project has a cost of LE 600 million in addition to EUR 56 million.
With a total capacity of 800,000 m3/day, the plant is considered one of the largest sewage treatment plants in Alexandria. The project aims to develop and improve the performance of the station through the implementation of the following works: the rehabilitation of the first phase to improve the performance and efficiency of the plant; and the treatment of the sludge generated by the plant using the digesters, which will have a positive effect in maximizing the utilization of the emerging sludge and improving the environmental status (pollution reduction and decrease of the odours resulting from the station by reducing the proportion of 30% of the sludge volume; the use of drying the digested sludge for different usages; generating electrical power up to 50% of the power plant consumption).
The idea of the project is to burn the products of the purification of sewage water for the extraction of gases used in generating electricity and achieving self-sufficiency in energy for the second phase of the project, which contributes to reducing the environmental impact of these sewage purification products. The project consists of: 4 circular tanks for sludge with a diameter of 36 metres and a height of 23 metres, a distributing tower for the sludge and compressors, a building for electricity generation, a boiler building, gas tanks, gas treatment units, a tank for digested sludge, and a receiving tank.
