:: 2018 ::
The project is two directions tunnel for vehicles with a total length of 1,700m and a width of 7m for each direction and 2 lanes in Mourad Street. It is equipped with the latest methods for safety, traffic monitoring and rainwater and flood drainage. The project is divided as follows:
• a tunnel with a length of 550m from Giza to El Galaa Bridge
• a tunnel with a length of 850m from El Galaa Bridge to Giza
• an outlet from El Galaa to Cairo University with a length of 300m.
The project represents the First phase of the development plan for Cairo University's surrounding area (Saft 2) to decrease the traffic pressure and the waiting rows in the university surrounding area and maximize utilization from Saft El Labn Axis as a vital one in Giza and its eastern expansion till Cairo Governorate.
The project is aiming at facilitating the traffic in El Nahda Square and Giza Entrance at the intersection of El Gamaa Bridge with Mourad Street because it is considered the most important and crowded area in Giza. Besides, the tunnel will directly link El Gamaa Bridge with El Gamaa surrounding area without surface intersections. In addition to these, the project has a positive environmental impact by decreasing the pollution and noise.
The project faced many obstacles which resembled by the existence of water and wastewater utilities networks, telephones and high voltage cables span over the road width which required the construction of new lines. The project is located in a very high traffic density area throughout the year… due to the presence of many foreign embassies, hotels, Cairo University, Giza Security Directorate, firefighting, Giza Zoo and El Orman Park, in addition to many administrative buildings and as being one of the axes linking Giza Square and number of areas and districts.
