The project is one of the most important desalination projects, as it has become urgent to meet the needs of the states within the current circumstances of water crises after the decrease in potable water amount. The Arab Contractors Company represented by Iraq Branch is carrying out the purification and desalination plant in Al Hartha, southern Iraq, Basra City; it is the biggest desalination plant in the Middle East after Jubail Plant in Saudi Arabia. The project is a JV between the Arab Contractors Company, Hitachi “Japanese Company” and OTV “French Company”. The plant will provide potable water for 3, 2 million people in Al Basra.

The project scope of works includes the civil works, landscaping, electromechanical installations and the shop drawings.

The 3^rd phase includes
The construction of water purification plant with 360,000m3/day. It comprises an intake with productive capacity 540,000m3/day, chlorine ward, drying building, distribution chamber, alum ward, sedimentation tanks, water tank, electricity distribution building for intake, chlorine injection building, warehouses building, transformers and power generation buildings and fuel tanks.

The 4^th phase includes
The construction of desalination plant with a capacity of 199.000m3/day, construction of medium voltage transformers plant which includes turbid water tank, filtration unit, CIP & Neutralization UF building, washing tanks, electricity distribution panels, purification unit, CIP & Neutralization RO building, RO ‎Electrical building, chemical admixtures, low voltage building and administrative building. The project is supported with different equipment to achieve works according to time schedule, such as: 2 ready mix concrete plants (capacity of 60 m3/hour and 120 m3/hour consecutively), 3 concrete pumps, 6 concrete transmixers, 3 tower cranes for serving the different buildings, 5 mobile cranes, 7 piling machines, 2 excavators and 6 tippers.
