The Prime Minister joined Her Excellency the President of the United Republic of Tanzania on an inspection tour and unveiling ceremony of Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant and Dam, one of the largest dams in Africa, implemented by an Egyptian JV.
At the start of the official inauguration activities of Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant and Dam project in the United Republic of Tanzania, which was implemented by the Egyptian JV consisting of the Arab Contractors Company and Elsewedy Electric, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly - Prime Minister, on behalf of His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, President of the Republic, participated in an extensive inspection tour of the project site, accompanied by Her Excellency President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, and in the presence of high-level delegations from both countries.
The joint field tour included inspecting the most prominent stations and vital facilities of the project to assess their completion and readiness for operation. The two sides began by inspecting the hydropower plant building (Power House), which includes 9 giant water turbines with a capacity of 235 MW each, with a total production capacity of 2115 MW. In addition, they inspected the 400-KV switchyard, which is responsible for transmitting the generated power from the production units and integrating it into the public electricity grid in Tanzania via the “Chalenzi 1” and “Chalenzi 2” interconnection circuits.
The Prime Minister, accompanied by Her Excellency the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, also inspected the Main Dam, which is one of the largest dams in Africa. It is a concrete dam that extends for 1036 meters and is 131 meters high, and the bridge that is built on top of the top of the dam body (Dam Crest Bridge) that connects the two banks of Rufiji River. Behind the dam, there is a giant storage lake with a capacity of about 34 billion m3, and it is equipped with 7 water outlets to control and discharge water flows.
Following the inspection tour, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly joined Her Excellency President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan in unveiling the commemorative plaque, signaling the official launch and opening of the project and the start of its actual operation to serve the brotherly Tanzanian people and support the development process in the country. Joint commemorative photos were also taken that brought together the Prime Minister, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, the two high-level delegations, and representatives of the Egyptian consortium implementing the project, in documentation of this historic occasion.
The high-level delegation accompanying the Prime Minister participated in the tour, unveiling ceremony, and official inauguration. This delegation included Dr. Hani Sweilem - Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Eng. Randa El Menshawy - Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, Eng. Ayman Attia - Governor of Alexandria (former Deputy Manager of the JV), Ambassador Sherif Ismail - Ambassador of Egypt to the United Republic of Tanzania, Eng. Ahmed El Assar - Chairman of the Arab Contractors Company, Eng. Ahmed El Sewedy - CEO and Managing Director of Elsewedy Electric, Eng. Sayed Farouk - former Chairman of the Company, Dr. Mohamed Onsi Elbeshouty – AC Vice Chairman, Eng. Heba Abu El Ella – AC Vice Chairman, Eng. Wael Hamdy - Vice Chairman of Elsewedy Electric Group, Dr. Eng. Ahmed El Adalany – AC Board Member, Eng. Osama Shawkat - Powerhouse Manager for the project, Eng. Youssef Hamdeen - Civil Works Manager for the project, Eng. Darem Debsi - Representative of the Egyptian JV, Eng. Mohamed Samaha - Project Manager, Eng. Rehab Yahia - Contracts Manager, and Eng. Sherif Hamza - Technical Office Manager.
Also participating in the events was a high-level Tanzanian delegation that included Dr. Emmanuel John Nshimbi - Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi - President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Mwijolo Nshimba - Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, the Speaker of Parliament, the Chief Justice, the Minister of Energy, and the Chairman of the Standing Parliamentary Committee on Energy and Minerals.
