Ibrahim Bekheet - Deputy Chairman of the Authority, inspected the West Nile Monorail project, which extends from New October Station to Wadi El-Nil Station, with a length of 43.8 km and includes 13 stations, namely (New October Station – Ahram Canadian University – Sadat – 6th of October University – Engineers Syndicate – Mall of Egypt – Sheikh Zayed City – Alexandria Road – Mansouria – Mariouteya – Ring Road – Bashteel – Wadi ElNil), in addition to the control and command center and the main workshop, and it is being implemented through a JV of Alstom and the Arab Contractors. The visit was attended on behalf of the Arab Contractors Company by Eng. Sayed Al Wazir - Vice Chairman of the Arab Contractors Company, Eng. Hassan Ibraheem – AC Board Member, and Eng. Hisham Ali – AC Executive Board Member. During his tour, the Minister inspected the various sectors of the project, where he followed up on the progress of the project’s implementation rates and electromechanical works, the finishing work, and the time schedule for operational trials. The Minister of Transport also inspected the control and command center building at the monorail workshop, which covers an area of approximately 80 feddan (336000 m2) and includes 13 buildings. The Minister reviewed the percentage of completion of civil works in the center and the percentage of completion of works in the center’s various buildings. The Minister of Transport also inspected the trains, where 30 trains have arrived out of a total of 30 trains planned to be supplied for the project, with a total of 120 carriages, each train consisting of 4 carriages. The commercial exploitation of the project was also followed up, whether through advertisements placed on the monorail columns or stations, within the framework of the Ministry of Transport’s comprehensive plan for the optimal commercial exploitation of all projects to achieve a financial return that contributes to providing distinguished services to the public and the sustainability of these projects. The minister directed that work be carried out around the clock and exert maximum effort to complete the implementation of all sectors of the project according to the specified time schedule, especially given the importance of the project, which will contribute to serving the large urban expansions in 6th of October City, such as the social housing project, development projects in South October, the southern expansions, and the industrial zone in 6th of October. The project also integrates with Cairo Metro Line 3 at Wadi El Nil station, with the October station on the first line of the High Speed Rail network (Ain Sokhna – Alexandria – Matrouh) at the Engineers Syndicate monorail station in 6th of October, with the railway network in Upper Egypt railway station in Bashteel - Giza, at Bashteel monorail station, and in the future with the CML4 – Phase 3 at 6th of October University station. He pointed out that this project represents a major civilizational shift in mass transportation, which is characterized by being fast, modern and safe means, saving fuel consumption, reducing environmental pollution rates, alleviating traffic congestion on main roads and streets, and attracting passengers to use it instead of private cars to reduce fuel and petroleum consumption. The monorail is also implemented on an elevated track with the possibility of implementing it on narrow and crowded streets that have small horizontal curves, so that it does not occupy a large space on the streets, in a relatively short implementation period, and with a large transport volume. It is worth noting that the total length of the monorail project (East/West Nile) is about 100 km with 35 stations, and the capacity of each of the 2 monorail lines is 600,000 passengers/ day. The monorail train consists of 4 carriages, and it is planned to reach 8 carriages in the future with the increase in population density in the areas it serves. It is also worth noting that the project serves many schools and universities (Ahram Canadian University – 6th of October University – Nile University), as well as mosques such as (AlHosary Mosque – Police Mosque), as well as hospitals (Dar AlFouad – Souad Kafafi – 6th of October), major commercial complexes and malls (Mall of Egypt – Mall of Arabia – HyperOne – Cityscape), and many new residential compounds such as the social housing project and development projects in South October and the southern expansions. It also serves the industrial zone in 6th of October, as well as the banking area. It also serves some main axes (Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road – Mansouria Axis – Mariouteya Axis – Ring Road) and many clubs (Zamalek Club – Engineers Syndicate Club – 6th of October Club – AlAhly Club). The project has contributed to providing 12,000 direct job opportunities for the design and implementation of (civil and electromechanical works) and about 8,000 indirect job opportunities in industries and services related to the project, in addition to the job opportunities that the project will provide in the field of management and operation.
