The Prime Minister inspects the seawater desalination research and experiment station in New Al Alamein City

During his tour of the Northwest Coast today to follow up on the implementation status of several service and development projects, Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly and his entourage inspected the seawater desalination research and testing station in New Al Alamein City. At the start of his tour of the seawater desalination research and experiment station, the Prime Minister highlighted the state’s interest in seawater desalination and its commitment to expanding this field, as it is one of the most important pillars of sustainable development. He also highlighted greater reliance on the latest technologies used in this field, which will contribute to enhancing and maximizing the efficiency of desalination plants and their production capacity. The Prime Minister emphasized on the importance of ongoing research experiments using desalinated seawater to cultivate various types of vegetables and fruits. This comes within the state’s efforts to maximize the agricultural potential of new coastal areas and expand agricultural land to enhance food security and achieving sustainable development goals. The Prime Minister listened to an explanation from Eng. Sherif El Sherbiny - Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, about the components and capabilities of the seawater desalination research and experimentation station in New Al Alamein City, and the exerted efforts in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation to utilize it for various agricultural activities and experiments. Eng. Sherif El Sherbiny stated that there is a joint coordination and cooperation between the ministries of housing and agriculture to conduct several experiments to establish some crops in the New Al Alamein City He declared that the experiments and studies are currently being conducted through the Agricultural Research and the Desert Researches centers on soil and water, and preparing crop compositions for some non-water-intensive and short-lived crops, especially vegetables and fruits that adapt to the climatic conditions of the region, in addition to some strategic crops. The Housing Minister pointed out that the success of such experiments would open new horizons for agricultural investment in the promising North Coast region, and provide new opportunities for agricultural projects in New Alamein which will contribute to transforming parts of this region into modern agricultural production centers relying on the latest irrigation and water-saving agriculture technologies that depends on desalinated seawater. Dr. Hossam Shawky - Head of the Desert Research Center at the Ministry of Agriculture, discussed a number of crop combinations expected for cultivation in this region based on desalinated seawater, the water consumption rates and proportions of these combinations.
