The project is an evidence of the potentials and capabilities of the Egyptian companies to implement mega projects on international level especially in Africa.
Dr. Assem El Gazzar - Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities headed Egyptian delegation to inspect the work progress and the executive status of Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant and Dam in Tanzania. This was in the presence of Dr. Medard Kalemani – Tanzania's Minister of Energy and Ambassador Mohamed Gaber Abul Wafa - Egyptian Ambassador to Tanzania.
The Housing Minister was accompanied by Mohamed Essam Eldin Ramadan – Assistant of the Housing Minister, Major Gen. Mahmoud Nassar – Head of the Central Agency for Reconstruction and Head of the Following Up Committee of the Project, the officials from the Egyptian JV “ The Arab Contractors Company and Elsewedy Electric"; they were headed by Eng. Sayed Farouk- CEO & President of the Arab Contractors Company, Eng. Ahmed Elsewedy – CEO & President of Elsewedy Electric, Eng. Ahmed El Assar – Senior Vice Chairman of the Arab Contractors Company and Eng. Wael Hamdy – Senior Vice Chairman of Elsewedy Electric.
The Minister of Housing declared that the visit represents the concern of the Egyptian government to implement this important national project for our brothers in Tanzania..the distinguished relation between the 2 countries and Egypt’s concern with the African Affair due to the expected role of the dam and the plant in providing energy, contributing in the development process, controlling the flood and preserving the environment.
Dr. Assem El Gazzar emphasized that President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has given directives to follow up the project with great concern and stressed on the quality of the works due to its importance for the Tanzanian people and to reflect the potentials and distinctive experience of our national companies to implement mega projects in this sector.
The Housing Minister pointed out that Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant and Dam in Tanzania is carried out by Egyptian JV “ The Arab Contractors Company and Elsewedy Electric" with a total cost 2.9 billion US$. He stated that this giant project is an evidence of the potentials and capabilities of the Egyptian companies to implement mega projects on international level especially in Africa and emphasis on Egypt’s concern to participate in the developmental projects in the African countries.
Dr. Medard Kalemani – Tanzania's Minister of Energy praised the exerted efforts of the Egyptian JV “The Arab Contractors Company and Elsewedy Electric", the provided cooperation from the Egyptian Government and its fully support to implement this national project for the Tanzanian people. He demanded to intensify follow-up by senior officials and comply with the time schedule of the project.
Major Gen. Mahmoud Nassar said that the project’s scope of work is the construction of a dam on Rufiji River with total length 1025m at crest level and 131m dam level and storage capacity 34 billion m3; a hydropower plant with a capacity of 2115mw on Rufiji River in Selous Game Reserve in Morogoro southwest of Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital and largest city of Tanzania. The hydropower plant will be the largest in Tanzania, with a generation rate of 6307 MW / hour yearly. The plant will also include a 400 KV switch yard to a substation that the generated electricity will be merged with the general electricity network.
Eng. Sayed Farouk added that the project includes 4 saddle dams for reservoir impounding of water, 2 temporary dams in front of the main dam and behind it for drying and diversion process during the construction of the main dam. In addition to spillway on the center of the main dam, an emergency spillway, 2 temporary bridges on Rufiji River. Besides, the construction of temporary and permanent roads to serve the project, facilitate movement and linking the project components with temporary and permanent camps.
Eng. Ahmed Elsewedy declared that the main components of the ongoing project include the main dam with a length of 1025m and it has 7 water outlets, water intake where there are tunnels to transfer water from the tanks to turbines, hydropower generation plant, a substation, a permanent concrete bridge on Rufiji River – permanent camp. In addition to the river diversion tunnel with 703m length, 12m width and 17m height, and it was accomplished on 10/11/2020.
