Dr. Moustafa Madbouli – the Prime Minister followed up the development works of Tahrir Square; he was accompanied by the ministers of antiquities, tourism, local development, housing and Cairo Governor.
During the visit he listened to exploration of the status of the development works which is carried out by the Arab Contractors Company. He said that Tahrir Square is one of the most famous squares in Egypt; government is interested in turning the square into a tourist destination.
Prime Minister instructed that a specific timetable be drawn up to complete Tahrir Square’s development work to regain its glamour as iconic square; which includes decorations such as a pharaonic obelisk and four sphinxes.
Eng. Mohsen Salah – CEO and Chairman of the Arab Contractors Company which is implementing the project declared that the work is carried out by 3 teamworks along the day under the supervision of the ministries of housing – antiquities – culture, Cairo governorate, the office of Eng. Ihab Mazhar – Project General Consultant and the office of Dr. Aly Abdel Rahman – the Construction Consultant.
Eng. Emam Afifi – the Vice Chairman of the Arab Contractors Company added that the works of the square is divided into 6 areas: the center of the square, Omar Makram, the Museum, the Complex, the old Foreign Affairs Ministry and Tahrir Car Park. The huge flagpole which was at the center of the square was removed, the removal of all the greeneries, excavation works which reaches the level of El Saddat Metro Station in order to construct the base for the obelisk with length of 19m and weight 100 tons. In addition to the implementation a fountain, the paving works, lighting and landscaping.
Eng. Mohammed Elwi – Manager of the Distinguished Buildings and Eng. Mahmoud Rostom – Manager of Projects pointed out that the works includes the implementation of 9 beams with 16m length and 2.30 height, the construction of walkways with concrete slabs, the cultivation of palm trees on both sides, seating areas which consisting of concrete blocks and some marble seats implemented by the Ready Mixed Concrete Department. Besides, floor lighting system, olive tree beds, installation of lighting instruments to add an esthetic feature which is consistent with the pharaonic characteristics and development works of the square.
