The Roads Lab Unit

The laboratory services are offered by the unit via :

  • Investigation of the intended road and carry out the initial surveys, including test pits that display the specifics of the current road cross section.
  • Studying the structural design (e.g. flexible pavement) of the intended road (upon request)
  • Identifying and approving the source of raw materials used in road construction.
  • Preparing asphalt mix designs for fresh raw materials, and due to the recently increased cost of importing raw materials, the roads lab unit prepares asphalt mix designs (upon the client's request) using reclaimed asphalt pavement “RAP” that results from the milling and pulverizing of old roads to save the high cost of new raw materials, especially bitumen “binder material,” based on the recent research and cooperative work with the public universities in Egypt.
  • Preparing design mixes for full-depth reclamation (FDR) with cement that have been used recently as cooperative work with the Ministry of Defense—the engineering authority for enhancing the existing pavement layers and saving the high cost of importing new raw materials, implemented successfully in the main mega projects in Egypt (e.g., the regional ring road around greater Cairo).
  • Investigate and plan the most effective way to execute the paving work items to meet the budget and timeline.
  • Preparing inspection and testing plans (imports - products) for all pavement layers items.
  • The sector's central administration oversees the sub-laboratories to guarantee that the inspection and testing plan is followed at the executive sites.
  • Activating the work system on imports and products and creating periodically documented laboratory reports for each project or asphalt mix plant based on the progress of the work.
  • Supplying technical engineering solutions for any issues pertaining to the validity of the executed road.
  • Supplying and maintaining laboratory equipment in the central laboratory/subsidiary laboratories.
  • Performing regular calibrations of laboratory equipment as per calibration plan.
  • Assessment of executed finished roads in accordance with the Egyptian Code of Practice for Urban and Rural Roads before the preliminary delivery of the project.
  • Reviewing the structural design approved by the client after recalculating (the structural number) SN based on the results of the resilient modulus test. Accordingly, more abundant and structurally safe structural sectors are provided as much as possible with the available raw materials (e.g. bitumen) (upon request).
  • Preparing and reviewing the submitted structural design of “Rigid pavement” based on the Egyptian Code of Practice for Urban and Rural Roads and the Portland cement association “PCA” method.
