The Minister: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi pays great attention to Tanzania Dam in light of the distinguished relations between Egypt and Tanzania.
El Sharbiny: Julius Nyerere Dam and Hydropower Plant in Tanzania provided job opportunities for 1,961 workers, most of whom are Tanzanian brothers, in addition to operating 525 pieces of equipment.
Julius Nyerere Dam and Hydropower Plant with a capacity of 2115 MW that will be integrated into Tanzania’s public electricity grid.
The remaining works will be finalized in preparation for the project’s completion and opening through a major celebration organized by the State of Tanzania in partnership with the Egyptian JV implementing the project.
Eng. Sherif El Sherbiny - Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities inspected Julius Nyerere Dam and Hydropower Plant and Dam in Tanzania, which is being implemented by the Egyptian JV (Arab Contractors - Elsewedy Electric),accompanied by Major General Mahmoud Nassar - Head of the Central Agency for Reconstruction - Head of the Project Follow-up Committee, Eng. Elham El Sergany- Assistant Supervisor of the Minister's Office, Eng. Ahmed El Assar - Chairman of the Arab Contractors Company, and Eng. Wael Hamdy – Senior Vice Chairman of Elsewedy Electric, as part of following up on the implementation status and ensuring the work progress on the project, which is nearing completion.
The visit was also attended by Eng. Ahmed El Adalany – AC Board Member, and Eng. Darem Debsi - Representative of the JV.
During his inspection of the various components of the project, Eng. Sherif El Sherbiny stated that his visit to the project comes within the framework of the interest that the Egyptian state, led by His Excellency President Abdel Fattah El Sisi gives to implementing the dam and plant project, given its importance to our brothers in Tanzania, in light of the distinguished relations between Egypt and Tanzania, and Egypt's interest in African affairs, as well as to activate the expected role of the dam and plant in providing energy to our brothers in Tanzania, controlling the flooding of Rufiji River and preserving the environment, as this huge project is being implemented by an Egyptian JV of the Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric at a cost of $2.9 billion.
The Minister of Housing added that the project aims to generate electricity with a capacity of 2115 MW, the generated energy will be transmitted via 400 kV transmission lines and will be integrated with the public electricity grid of Tanzania. The dam also controls the flood to protect the surrounding environment from the risks of floods and swamps and to store about 34 billionm3 of water in a newly created lake, ensuring the permanent availability of water throughout the year for the purposes of agriculture, fishing, and preserving the surrounding wildlife in the largest nature reserve in Africa and one of the largest reserves in the world.
Eng. Sherif El Sherbiny emphasized that this project embodies the ability and potential of Egyptian national companies to implement major projects at the international level, especially in the African continent, as the project provided job opportunities for 1961 workers, most of whom are Tanzanian brothers, in addition to the operation of 525 pieces of equipment.
Major General Eng. Mahmoud Nassar - Head of the Central Agency for Reconstruction, pointed out that the project includes the construction of a dam on Rufiji River with a length of 1025 meters at the top and a height of 131 meters, and a power station located on the side of Rufiji River in Selous Game Reserve in the Morogoro area southwest of Dar es Salaam (the commercial capital and largest city in Tanzania). The plant will be the largest in Tanzania with an electrical capacity of 6307 MW/hour annually.
For his part, Eng. Ahmed El Assar - Chairman of the Arab Contractors Company, pointed out that the project to establish a power generation station had been under study by the Tanzanian government since the 60s of the last century, and in December 2018, the Tanzanian government awarded the contract to establish the project in a global tender to the Egyptian JV of the Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric at a cost of $2.9 billion.
The Chairman of the Arab Contractors Company added that the project components include the main dam, which is a concrete dam 1036 m long at the top with 7 water outlets, and 4 supplementary dams (a concrete dam 1700m long 3 rock dams with a total length of 16.5 km) to form a water reservoir with a capacity of about32.8 billion m3, in addition to two temporary dams in front of and behind the main dam to dry and divert during the implementation of the main dam. The Egyptian JV officials added that the project includes the hydropower plant, including civil works, turbines and transformers with a capacity of 2115 MW, and a 400 KV electricity connection station, in addition to various equipment including the construction of a residential complex - road network - crushers and mixers, as well as a water spillway in the middle of the main dam and the emergency spillway on sub-dam No. 1, temporary and permanent roads to serve the project area, tunnels (a 703m long tunnel to divert river water 3 tunnels with a total length of 1550 m to pass the water needed for the power plant), a permanent concrete bridge and a temporary bridge over Rufiji River.
For his part, Eng. Wael Hamdy – Senior Vice Chairman of Elsewedy Electric, explained that the Egyptian JV implementing the project has completed the following works: 8 turbines, numbers (3, 2, 4, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5) out of a total of(9) turbines, and the ninth turbine is being completed. The turbines that have been put into operation contribute to strengthening the national energy grid in Tanzania.
The works of the main dam and the subsidiary dams have also been completed, which played a major role in sparring Tanzania huge human and material losses as a result of the unprecedented floods that occurred at the beginning of this year, as well as the works of the intake and water tunnels leading to the turbine building, the permanent bridge, the temporary and permanent roads, the electricity connection station, and the camp for the operating crew for the client and contractor. The remaining works are currently being completed in preparation for the completion of the project and its opening through a major celebration organized by the State of Tanzania in partnership with the Egyptian JV implementing the project.
