Minister of Housing follows up on progress of Julius Nyerere Hydropower Dam and Plant in Tanzania

Eng. Sherif El Sherbiny - Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, held a meeting to follow up on the progress of Julius Nyerere Hydropower Dam and Plant project on Rufiji River in Tanzania, which is being implemented by an Egyptian JV of the Arab Contractors and Elsewedy Electric. The meeting was attended by Eng. Ahmed El Assar - Chairman of the Arab Contractors, Eng. Ahmed El Sewedy – CEO of Elsewedy Electric, Eng. Wael Hamdy – Senior Vice Chairman of Elsewedy Electric, and officials from the Central Agency for Reconstruction. Eng. Sherif El Sherbiny stressed that the Egyptian state pays great attention to implementing this huge project, which embodies the distinguished relations between Egypt and Tanzania, and confirms the ability and potential of the Egyptian companies to implement major projects, especially for our brothers in the African continent, and is being followed up periodically by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to achieve development for our brothers in Tanzania, provide the necessary electrical energy to the Republic of Tanzania, control the flood of Rufiji River, and preserve the environment. During the meeting, the Minister of Housing reviewed the components of the project, which includes the construction of a dam with a length of 1,025 m, and the storage capacity of the dam lake reaching 34 billion m?. It also includes a hydropower plant with a capacity of 2,115 MW. The station is located on the side of Rufiji River in a natural reserve in "Morgoro," southwest of the city of Dar es Salaam (the commercial capital) and the largest city in Tanzania, in addition to reviewing the other components of the project. The Minister of Housing directed that all achievements made in this huge project be documented through booklets and photographic documents to record what the JV has accomplished. In this context, officials from the two companies confirmed that a museum will be built within the project components to document all implementation phases. The Minister also stressed the necessity of presenting this great experience at international forums, especially those organized in African countries, such as the Energy Conference scheduled to be held soon in Tanzania, that will assert the ability of Egyptian companies to implement mega projects and will open new horizons for our companies. It is noteworthy that the Egyptian JV (the Arab Contractors Company and Elsewedy Electric Company) signed the contract in December 2018 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It was in the presence of the former Tanzanian President and Dr. Moustafa Madbouli, the Egyptian Prime Minister. The contract value is $2.9 billion to build a hydropower plant with a capacity of 2115 MW.The project objectives are to generate 6307 MW/hour annually for the consumption of 17 million Tanzanian families. In addition to these, the dam is controlling the flood to protect the environment from the risks of floods and swamps, storing about 34 billion m? of water in a new lake to ensure permanent water availability throughout the year for agriculture, and preserving the surrounding wildlife in one of the largest forests in Africa and the whole world.
