Minister of Awqaf: We are witnessing an unprecedented renaissance in mosque architecture. On Friday, March 29, 2024, Dr. Mohammed Mokhtar Gomaa – the Minister of Awqaf, opened Sayyida Zainab Mosque in Cairo after its renovation and development. The Minister of Awqaf praised the high level of development carried out by the Arab Contractors Company under the supervision of the Armed Forces Engineering Authority - Military Works Department. The Minister extended his greetings and appreciation to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi for his interest in mosques in general and the mosques of Ahl al-Bayt in particular, which enabled us to achieve this great level. The Minister of Awqaf stated that the total number of mosques that were built, replaced, renovated, developed, maintained, or furnished during the era of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi reached 11,887 mosques at an estimated cost of about LE 18 billion. The opening of Sayyida Zainab Mosque comes after the opening of Hussein Mosque, Sayyida Nafisa Mosque, Sayyida Fatma El Nabawiya Mosque, and Sayyida Ruqayyah Mosque. On the other hand, Eng. Mohamed Elwi - Executive Board Member of the Arab Contractors Company, Eng. Hani Maher - Manager of Palaces and Monuments Restoration Department, and Eng. Medhat Mahmoud ElGaml - Area Manager - Project Manager, explained that the development work included all archaeological elements, the renewal of facades, decorations, calligraphy, marvered glass “internal and external”, the dome and the minaret, the plaster windows, dikkat al-muballigh (a raised area from which prayers are reiterated to worshippers), Sheikh Al-Shaarawy’s chair, the wooden doors, the silver and copper accessories, in addition to the sheikhs’ rooms, sanitary works and bathrooms, and the construction of a new entrance with a height of 18 meters overlooking Al Sadd Street, which required work 24 hours a day during the past three months so that the mosque could be opened in this blessed month.
