Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, held a meeting to follow up on the implementation status of Alexandria shore protection and expanding the Corniche. This was in the presence of Dr. Assem El Gazzar - Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, Major General Hisham Al-Suwaifi - Assistant to the Presidential Adviser for Urban Planning, Major General Mahmoud Nassar - Head of the Central Agency for Reconstruction, Major General Nabil Nagy - Armed Forces Engineering Authority, Eng. Ahmed El Assar – CEO and Chairman of the Arab Contractors Company, Major General Moukhtar Hussein - Head of the Central North Coast Reconstruction Authority, Dr. Walid Abdel Azim - Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Alexandria University, Eng. Ahmed Rashad Abbas - Chairman of the Egyptian Public Authority for Shore Protection, and officials of a number of ministries and the concerned parties.
The Prime Minister began the meeting by noting that there is great attention to protecting Alexandria’s shores and expanding the Corniche, emphasizing that restoring the city’s beaches is a top priority.
Counselor Mohamed Al Homsani - the Official Cabinet Spokesman, stated that the meeting addressed several related points regarding the Corniche expansion project in Alexandria and shore protection works, which were explored by the concerned authorities, whether through the Armed Forces Engineering Authority, the Egyptian Public Authority for Shore Protection, or the Central North Coast Reconstruction Authority, affiliated with the Central Agency for Reconstruction, the Arab Contractors Company, and the Engineering Center for Public Service of the Faculty of Engineering at Alexandria University.
In this context, the official spokesman indicated that the decisions and procedures for developing and expanding the Alexandria Corniche were reviewed, especially the work implemented by the Egyptian Public Authority for Shore Protection and the Arab Contractors Company as an urgent priority, and the implementation status for urgent protection work in the project was also reviewed.
Al Homsani added that the implementation status of the expansion of El Geish Road (Corniche) from Al Montazah to the House of Naval Forces "Al Mahrousa" in Alexandria was in coordination with the Armed Forces Engineering Authority.
The meeting also discussed the impact of climate change on the Egyptian coasts in general, including the beaches of Alexandria, and in this regard, they explored the types of marine protection represented by breakwaters that are parallel to the beach and into the sea, which are either visible or submerged, as well as the jetties, which are an extension of stones and concrete into the sea used to reduce erosion and create space for new beaches, in addition to the revetments as well as "claddings." The most appropriate solutions for shore protection were explained, and the method of using artificial intelligence to solve the problem of sea level rise was also explored.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister stressed the need to expedite the implementation of the Alexandria shores protection because of its utmost importance in reducing the impacts of climate change while ensuring the sustainability of the work being implemented. In this regard, Dr. Mostafa Madbouly directed the Arab Contractors Company to quickly complete the work assigned to it.
