The officials of the Egyptian JV executing the project also confirmed the progress of the project work - with the participation of about 12000 workers, "mostly Tanzanians," despite many natural obstacles, aiming to complete the installation and testing of the 9 vertical hydroelectric generation units, successively, starting next year, and pump their production of 400 kV onto the Tanzanian national grid to double its capacity, thus contributing to the delivery of electricity to millions of Tanzanian families and achieving an industrial renaissance that pushes the Tanzanian economy towards the horizons of sustainable development. The Egyptian JV officials indicated that the construction work of the main body of the dam, which rises 190 metres above sea level, was successfully completed on the last 6th of October, on a base of about 20,000 m2, and a length of 1033 m at the top. In the preparations for the start of the water impounding of Rufiji River behind the dam, including the completion of installations and tests of the giant gates at the entrances of the river diversion tunnel, and the three tunnels to deliver water to the electricity generation turbines, in addition to the installation of the lower and middle water drainage gates in the body of the dam, which will control the provision of the minimum from water drainage to preserve the river environment below the dam, and in the week preceding the celebration, the JV blew up and removed temporary dams before and after the main dam, in parallel with the installation of 9 giant turbines producing no less than 6.3 billion KW/hour annually of low-cost electrical power. It is noteworthy that the Egyptian JV (the Arab Contractors Company and Elsewedy Electric Company) signed the contract in December 2018 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. It was in the presence of the former Tanzanian President and Dr. Moustafa Madbouli, the Egyptian Prime Minister. The contract value is $2.9 billion. The project objectives are to generate 6307 MW/hour annually for the consumption of 17 million Tanzanian families. In addition to these, the dam is controlling the flood to protect the environment from the risks of floods and swamps, storing about 34 billion m3 of water in a new lake to ensure permanent water availability throughout the year for agriculture, and preserving the surrounding wildlife in one of the largest forests in Africa and the whole world.
